Feeling depressed from time to time is normal. We all experience a wide range of emotions that are part of being human. Drinking Coffee May Reduce Uric Acid

There may be some pretty good news for coffee lovers. Studies suggest that the consumption of coffee appears to lower the buildup of uric acid in the system. Gout is caused by the accumulation of uric acid in the blood. Normally, uric acid dissolves in the bloodstream, but sometimes there is a problem with that process which can lead to the pain and misery of gout. Gout usually appears in the extremities of the body like the toes and feet. It can cause swelling, redness and a lot of pain. Usually, it begins during midlife and more often among males.

If you're a coffee drinker, this next bit of information shouldn't be a chore. Snacking When You Have Gout

Having a snack or two each day is part of most people's lives. Whether it is a coffee break in the middle of the morning or getting the late night munchies, an occasional snack is a common indulgence. But what do you do about snacking if you are suffering from gout?

When is CT Scanning a Good Option for Diagnosing Gout?

If you suffer from the pain of gout, but are unable to get a proper diagnosis from traditional tests, CT scans can help to confirm the presence of the disease. This is encouraging news. After all, it can be extremely frustrating to experience chronic pain, often debilitating, and yet not be able to confirm with the doctor that you, indeed, have gout.

When uric acid crystals begin to build up around the joints of your toes and fingers this can cause inflammation which creates a great deal of pain and can eventually even become disabling and disfiguring. Although men are more likely to have gout, women are not immune, especially after menopause.

Typically, the doctor will withdraw fluid from the joints where the patient is experiencing pain. The fluid will then be examined for uric acid crystal content. However, for those patients who for one reason or another cannot have the fluid withdrawn or who continue to have tests that come back showing negative results, CT scanning at that point may be a more accurate and consistent method of diagnosis. Generally speaking, the diagnosis of gout is a fairly straightforward process. Yet, on occasion the disease presents in an atypical fashion. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteomyelitis are two diseases that can also mimic the symptoms of gout, thereby contributing to the confusion.

Duel energy computed tomography is a type of CT scan which can replace the traditional method of drawing fluid from the joints. Unfortunately, CT scans are considerably more expensive than the normal tests conducted. Also, there still remains a number of patients for whom the scans do not work. This method of scanning had already been proven to be highly accurate at spotting kidney stones. It was inevitable, perhaps, that testing would be conducted to determine whether it would work as effectively for identifying uric crystals.

At the end of the day, the fact remains that living with the daily pain of chronic gout without a proper diagnosis can be very frustrating. For those cases, in particular, the possibility of CT scanning holds great promise.

Why are Americans at a Higher Risk for Gout?

Gout, a kissing cousin of arthritis, usually attacks the big toe but can spread to the insteps, ankles, heels, knees, wrists, fingers and elbows. If a person suffers from a buildup of uric acid, it may begin to form painful crystals in the joints. Inflammation follows. Occasionally, even kidney stones are formed from uric acid crystals.

Statistically, it appears that gout and arthritis are less likely in countries where there is a smaller amount of meat consumed. Countries like New Zealand, China, Japan and Africa begin to see a rise in cases of gout and arthritis when a Western diet becomes more popular.

Unfortunately, gout is on the rise in the United States. But is there something that we can start doing now to prevent gout? Are there natural substances that when consumed may help to stave off gout in the first place?

A few suggestions

There are a number of alternative remedies that many believe bring relief to symptoms of gout. Although most of the information surrounding these natural adjuncts is anecdotal in nature, all of the touted remedies are good for you whether you have gout or not.

For example, taking several tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, preferably low processed, combined with a little baking soda has been reported to relieve gout symptoms.

Can Vitamin C Lower Uric Acid Levels?

The benefits of vitamin C in the diet are undisputed. Vitamin C, a water-soluble vitamin, strengthens the immune-system and protects against infection. It can help to heal wounds. Additionally, vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, can provide protective antioxidants which help keep our cells from being damaged by free radicals. For some time now, vitamin C has been touted as a means to lower uric acid in patients diagnosed with gout, but is that claim true?

While vitamin C may help to protect against developing gout in the first place, once diagnosed it does not seem to hold such healing powers. Gout is an inflammatory form of arthritis that causes excruciating pain and swelling in the joints. This is triggered by the crystallization of uric acid. Lowering the uric acid levels are highly recommended in order to alleviate symptoms and get back to a normal life.

The medical community reports that the management of gout requires treatment with medications. In order to lower urate levels, vitamin C does not show significant results even when paired with medication.

Three Types of Kidney Stones
