Is Gout Weed an Effective Gout Medication?

Goutweed gained its name through its use as a medicinal plant to treat gout and other forms of arthritis. In fact, its name is derived from the Latin word for gout, podagra. It's also known by many other names over the world, including ground elder, bishop's weed, snow in the mountain, herb gerard and pigweed.

According to the old and revered Culpepper Complete Herbal, "Neither is it to be supposed gout-wort hath its name for nothing but upon experiment to heal the gout and sciatica; as also joint-aches, and other cold griefs. The very bearing of it about one eases the pain of the gout, and defends him that bears it from the disease."

Goutweed's ability to lower uric acid levels has not been substantially studied, but any benefit as a gout medication may lie in its properties as a diuretic. It's also believed to have sedative and anti-inflammatory properties. A homeopathic remedy for arthritis, rheumatism and sciatica is made from the flowering plant.

Goutweed is a perennial plant in the carrot family. It's native to Europe and Russia (excluding Spain) and is believed to have been brought to England as a food plant by the Romans. Monks cultivated it as a healing herb in the Middle Ages, giving it the name herb Gerard in dedication to St. Gerard, who used it to treat gout. It is still frequently found around many old ecclesiastical ruins.

Both the stalk and the leaves of goutweed have been used as a gout medicine through the ages, internally and externally. It is most commonly used as a tea, or mashed into a paste and applied to painful joints as a poultice. The young leaves are boiled and eaten as a vegetable in Sweden and Switzerland, or eaten raw in a spring salad. It is also eaten by Chinese and Tibetan monks. Later in the season, the leaves have a strong flavor that most people find unpleasant. The white root stalk is described as pungent and aromatic.

Goutweed grows about 12 to 18 inches high, with large leaves, furrowed hollow stems and numerous small white flowers. It spreads so rapidly and determinedly that it is considered to be a major garden weed. Goutweed is so invasive it is almost impossible to eradicate once the roots have taken hold.

Cherries Prove an Effective Gout Medication

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia). The excess uric acid forms painful crystals in joints, tendons and surrounding tissues, causing recurring attacks of red, tender, hot, swollen and extremely painful joints, usually the joint at the base of the big toe. Other joints such as the ankles, heels, knees, fingers and wrists can also be affected, and crystals occasionally appear in the kidneys. Fatigue and fever sometimes accompany gout attacks.

Gout is caused by a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors. Dietary factors account for about 12% of gout, especially drinking alcohol and fructose-laden drinks and eating red meat and seafood. Gout is also associated with obesity, weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, lead poisoning, abnormal kidney function, joint trauma and surgery. Certain medications can also contribute to gout.

Until recently, it was believed that purine rich foods like asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, yeast, organ meats and legumes made gout worse, but recent studies found that's not the case. Some foods are known to help alleviate gout, including berries, bananas, pineapple, leafy green vegetables, low fat dairy products, complex carbohydrates, foods high in vitamin C, chocolate, coffee and tea.

One encouraging study discovered that people with gout cut their repeated attacks almost in half just by eating 20 cherries a day. Good quality cherry extract, found in health food stores, was also an effective gout medicine. The finding reinforces years of anecdotal reports from patients who attested to the beneficial effects of cherry juice for gout.

Doctors take a three-pronged approach to treating gout, prescribing different gout medications to 1) manage pain, 2) decrease joint inflammation, and 3) reduce uric acid to avoid future flare ups. Analgesics such as acetaminophen are used to manage the pain, while the NSAID Indocin (indomethacin) is the most commonly prescribed anti inflammatory medication.

Colchicine has been the standard of treatment for the acute stage of gout since the 1800s. Colchicine for gout is taken orally to both reduce inflammation and to prevent future gouty arthritis attacks. Corticosteroids such as prednisone are powerful anti inflammatory drugs that may also be administered for acute gout.

Under excretion of uric acid by the kidneys accounts for about 90% of hyperuricemia, while overproduction of uric acid accounts for fewer than 10% of cases. Medications to lower uric acid such as Zyloprim (allopurinol) or Uloric (generic febuxostat) are prescribed after the flare up has passed to help prevent further attacks. Since it received FDA approval for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in 2009, febuxostat has been prescribed increasingly over allopurinol. Febuxostat has been shown to be more effective in shrinking uric acid deposits, and not as likely to impact on kidney function.

Age Old Resin Proves a Natural Arthritis and Gout Medication

An age old substance could offer new hope for sufferers of inflammatory arthritis and the more common osteoarthritis. That substance is frankincense, a resin derived from the hardy Boswellia tree. Frankincense has been traded for over 5000 years, and is best known for its aroma. It is commonly used in incense and perfumes.

Frankincense is also widely used in various religious rites, and was said to be among the gifts presented to baby Jesus by the biblical Magi, or wise men, along with gold and myrrh (a similar reddish resin). Frankincense is still burned in the Roman Catholic Church.

Frankincense has also long been valued for its medicinal properties. The resin is edible, and is used in Asian traditional medicine to aid digestion and promote healthy skin. Frankincense has also been used in Ayurvedic (traditional Indian) medicine for hundreds of years, and is called dhoop. Dhoop is used for treating arthritis, healing wounds, strengthening the female hormonal system and combating germs and mosquitoes.

Scientists have been investigating frankincense as a treatment for chronic inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, asthma, cancer, and rheumatoid and osteoarthritis In 2008, researchers from John Hopkins University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem reported that frankincense smoke was a psychoactive drug that relieved depression and anxiety in mice.

In another 2008 study at the University of California, 70 osteoarthritis patients taking a frankincense extract showed a significant improvement in their condition in less than seven days, with no major adverse effects. The extract was a proprietary product developed by Laila Nutraceuticals.

Recently, scientists from Cardiff University in Wales, noting that frankincense was a traditional herbal remedy for arthritis in the local Somali community, began to research it in the lab. Their research focused on whether and how extracts of frankincense could help reduce arthritic inflammation and reduce pain.

They were able to demonstrate that an extract of a rare frankincense species, Boswellia frereana, inhibited the production of key inflammatory molecules, helping to prevent the painful breakdown of cartilage that is characteristic of arthritis and gouty arthritis.

"What our research has managed to achieve is to use innovative chemical extraction techniques to determine the active ingredient in frankincense," explained Dr. Ahmed Ali, "Having done this, we are now able to further characterize the chemical entity and compare its success against other anti-inflammatory drugs used for treating the condition."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), arthritis is the most common form of disability in the US, impacting nearly 21 million adults. Arthritis can be classified as either inflammatory or non-inflammatory. Inflammatory arthritis is characterized by the presence of inflammatory white blood cells in the joint fluid.

Is Vitamin C a Natural Gout Remedy?

Vitamin C is one of the best known and most readily available vitamins, and also one of the cheapest. John Mepham of has researched vitamin C as a natural remedy for gout, and written an e-book in which he shares his findings.

Mepham's research suggests that vitamin C is a helpful gout remedy that increases the body's ability to excrete uric acid. But he warns that the effect may be more subtle than gout sufferers would achieve with prescription gout medication. He also cautions that rapid changes in uric acid levels caused by Vitamin C or a prescription gout drug can trigger a painful gouty arthritis attack.

Celery as a Natural Gout Remedy

Celery has been used for centuries as a natural diuretic and anti-inflammatory. When it comes to gouty arthritis, celery is believed to act in much the same way as the gout drug allopurinal.

Gout is caused by excess uric acid in the body. Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme that plays a major role in the production of uric acid. Allopurinal is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor that reduces the creation of uric acid.

Studies in rats showed that celery may also inhibit xanthine oxidase. Two small human studies treating arthritis and gouty arthritis patients with celery extract also achieved positive results.

James Duke, PhD, a botanical consultant and former ethnobotanist, is the author of The Green Pharmacy. After Duke developed gout and was prescribed the gout medication allopurinol, he decided to try celery instead. He reported he kept his gout symptoms at bay using two to four tablets of celery extract a day, without taking allopurinol.

Celery's ability to both reduce swelling and increase the elimination of uric acid through the urine makes it a popular natural alternative to prescription gout medications. Herbalists advise that celery extract should not be taken by pregnant women, or by anyone with an allergy to celery.

Epsom Salt Relieves Gouty Arthritis Pain

Another popular natural remedy for the pain and inflammation of gout is Epsom salt. Epsom salt gets its name from the town of Epsom in England, where it is distilled from springs rising in an area where porous chalk hills meet non-porous clay. Epsom salt is composed of magnesium, sulpher and oxygen, and is also known by its chemical name, magnesium sulphate.

According to the Universal Health Institute of Chicago, magnesium is the second-most abundant element in human cells. The Institute says magnesium helps to regulate the activity of more than 325 enzymes, performing a vital role in orchestrating many bodily functions, from muscle control and electrical impulses to energy production and the elimination of harmful toxins.

American's magnesium levels have dropped more than 50% in the last century, and it's believed that most Americans are magnesium deficient. Magnesium deficiency is thought to play a role in arthritis and joint pain, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, digestive ailments, chronic fatigue and other ailments.

The Universal Health Institute says that magnesium also:

- Eases stress and improves sleep and concentration
- Helps muscles and nerves function properly
- Regulates activity of over 325 enzymes
- Helps prevent artery hardening and blood clots
- Allows the body to use insulin more effectively

Some people claim adding one cup of vinegar (preferably apple cider) per every two cups of Epsom salt enhances its effects as a gout treatment. Soaking a gout-affected foot in a foot bath warm water and Epsom salt can provide almost immediate relief for many gout sufferers.

You can also make a compress by dissolving two cups of Epsom salt in a gallon of warm water, soaking a cloth or towel in it, and wrapping the cloth around the sore joint (in the case of gouty arthritis, usually the big toe). Some people use a thick sock to hold the compress against the effected area, but others can't stand the pressure of a sock on the sore joint. You can also cut the end off an old sock and use it to secure a compress applied to arthritic knees, wrists, and elbows.

Bananas as a Natural Gout Treatment

Christine Marquette, a registered dietician from the Austin Regional Clinic, has produced an informational video titled Nutrition & Diets: About Bananas & Gout. In the video, Marquette explains why bananas are thought to decrease gout symptoms.

She attributes bananas' ability to act as a natural gout treatment to their high levels of potassium and vitamin C. Marquette points out that gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the body, and a gouty arthritis flare up increases the acidity of the body.

Potassium helps regulate the body's acid-base balance (the normal equilibrium between acids and alkalis). The potassium in bananas may decrease the acidity in the body, making it more alkaline.

As well, the vitamin C in bananas has anti-inflammatory qualities that may help reduce the painful inflammation which always accompanies a gout attack. While she doesn't go so far as to say bananas could replace gout medication, Marquette does feel the fruit should be a part of any gout patient's diet.

Exercising to Ease Gout Flares

Gout flares can be both painful and debilitating. Throbbing pain in your knee or foot usually makes your exercise decision for you. No one wants to have to hobble from machine to machine, or even to have to lace up your tight running shoes. But how to start? Your first step should be talking to your doctor. Your doctor can recommend which specific exercises can be safely used on your body. Everyone has gout in different parts of their body, and what works for your friend may have a negative effect on you. Also, remember that if you have a gout flare-up, be sure to stop exercising. You can get back on your schedule once the pain is gone.

"Range of motion" exercises tend to be a core element in a gout exercise regimen. Exercises such as tai chi, band exercises and gentle yoga are great for keeping the joints limber. This maximizes circulation in these areas, often clearing out uric acid. Range of motion exercises also reduce stiffness, which if left unchecked, can lead to loss of mobility, weight gain, and unnecessary pain.

Another great group of exercises to add to your regime are strength training exercises. Reduce Gout Flares: Drink More Skimmed Milk

Experimental studies have indicated that certain components of dairy products, particularly glycomacropeptide (GMP) and G600 milk fat extract (G600), can potentially lessen down the inflammatory response to gout crystals.

Researchers studied the frequency of gout flare-ups in 120 patients with the condition over 3 months. All of the people had experienced at least two flare-ups in the preceding 4 months.

The patients were divided into three different groups; lactose powder; skimmed milk powder; or skimmed milk powder enriched with GMP and g600. Each powder was mixed in 250 ml of water as a vanilla flavoured shake and drunk daily.

In all, 102 patients completed the three month study. And the results showed that those on the enriched skimmed milk diet had a significantly greater reduction in gout flare-ups compared with the other two groups.

Hot Water for Gout Pain Relief

Gout can be painful. When the build up of uric acid in the bloodstream begins to crystallize and settles in your joints, discomfort follows. Anyone who has suffered from flareups or gout attacks usually welcomes any possible relief from the pain that they can find. Applying heat may help to break up those crystals. When inflammation is reduced the discomfort of an attack subsides. Adding a little Epsom salts and some ibuprofen to the treatment as well can make you even more comfortable.

Running a hot bath or swimming in a heated pool are two great ways to enjoy the benefits of warm water. Test the water first for comfort level. The last thing that you want is to get burned. Also as an additional precaution, diabetics or those with high blood pressure might consider using a hot cloth compress as sitting in a hot bath is not recommended for those conditions. Don't rush the treatment. Try to stay in the water for at least 15 minutes, longer is even better. As you relax in the hot water, the heat dilates your blood vessels, helping to improve circulation.

Epsom salts has magnesium in it. By adding two cups of it to hot water, it may enhance the benefits of the treatment. If you can manage a routine of hot water treatments twice daily, it is even more likely that your pain will be reduced. Taking two Ibuprofen before your bath for extra pain relief is also helpful. Try a soothing foot bath on occasion. Add a third of a cup of ground ginger to the water. You may notice that you start to sweat, but that may also help to eliminate excess uric acid from your system. Once again, don't rush the process. Set aside at least thirty minutes for the foot bath.

Incorporating light stretching before and after the hot bath can be helpful. In fact, stretching, overall, is a good practice to get into regardless of whether you suffer from gout or not. Nothing too vigorous is necessary, but stretching with gout is an ideal way to assist in decreasing the uric acid in the body while increasing flexibility.

In the end, water may be your best friend. Increasing your daily consumption of water is highly recommended. It has been thought that dehydration is a possible contributor to gout. So what kind of shoes are recommended? Styles that offer a lot of room for the toes are the best. The wrong shoes can make gout worsen over time. This is true of other foot ailments, too. Yet, many people still insist on either wearing shoes that are stylish but uncomfortable or they are simply uninformed on the matter.

You would think that an open-toed shoes like a sandal would offer great relief to a gout sufferer's feet. Not true. Shoes without good support, lack of stability, or sufficient cushioning are poor choices. These misguided choices in shoe wear often lead to additional pain and disability. Only about 56% of people with gout select shoes that offer the proper support and comfort like athletic sneakers, walking shoes, or oxfords.

Those with gout need shoes that offer toe box width and heel sizing to suit your foot. There needs to be plenty of support and cushioning. However, the narrow shoes or pointed-toe shoes are definitely not going to help matters. Depth of shoe is important, too. Although sandals are not advised, if you do wear them make sure the strap does not cover the joint of the toe. It isn't easy in a world of shoes and more shoes to find the kind of comfortable fit that is so important to those with gout. Seek advice from a podiatrist. Does the Practice of Yoga Help Gout?

Exercise is something that we all need in our lives. When you are suffering from the restrictive pain of gout, it can be challenging to find an appropriate form of exercise that will not only help to keep your weight in check, but also reduce the symptoms that have become such a source of discomfort. Not all exercise is equal when it comes to the question of gout. Yet, yoga, long touted as an almost perfect form of exercise for the mind and body, may have something special to offer to the gout sufferer.

High levels of uric acid in the body can become very problematic when overlooked for too long. In some people it can lead to gout. Controlling uric acid becomes essential to eliminating gout attacks. Some gout patients have found that yoga helps to control the acid levels. Of course, diet and medication is important, too, but yoga devotees insist that there are certain positions or yoga poses that literally help to oxidize uric acid and reduce the harmful levels.

Once the proper diet is in place and the patient is also drinking plenty of fluids, adding certain poses to your treatment plan may have significant benefits, including alleviating pain. These specific asanas or poses are highly recommended as they stretch the muscles of the back and also improve the circulation. In addition, yoga can help to manage, reduce and maintain a healthier weight, although not as aggressively as other exercises. The mind/body connection that is part of daily yoga practice is great for reducing stress.
