Alcohol and Gout

There are many things that are accepted as "fact" to cause gout flares and attacks. Doctors will tell you, no drinking, no red meats, no asparagus, etc. But how do you know? And how much is too much?

Many people are unwilling to give up their treats and are trying new ways to reduce the occurrences of gout flares. Alcohol in particular seems to be a "vice" of many people. One article quoted a gout sufferer as saying "I will go completely vegetarian before I will give up my wine!" Drinking is an enjoyable social interaction, with billions of people worldwide enjoying booze, whether it is a glass of wine with dinner or having multiple drinks while out dancing.

The question is-are you willing to give all of that up? Many patients are saying no. a trick that has worked for many patients is- if you have alcohol. Flush it out! That is, drink a huge amount of water to "rinse" out the uric acid before it has a chance to crystallize in your joints. This has the added benefit of reducing hangovers!

Most patients, who have had gout for many years, have stated that how much you can drink really depends on how good the rest of your diet is. For example, after eating steak, mashed potatoes and macaroni salad, having a couple of beers isn't necessarily a good idea. But having a healthy salad with grilled chicken may work to allow you to have a glass or two of red wine. Many gout sufferers reported "experimenting" with their diet and alcohol consumption in order to determine which approach is best for them. Are you willing to risk having a gout flare in order to have a drink?

From our research, red wine seems to be the best tolerated of the alcohols. Many patients reported no reaction to having a glass of wine with dinner, or even a glass or two on special occasions. Beer on the other hand, seems to be the least tolerated. There may be many reasons for this. Beer tends to be drunk in multiples, whereas a glass of wine is slowly sipped and enjoyed.

Wine though, especially red wine is quite acidic, and some gout sufferers are reporting that this is causing more flares than beer. All of these gout sufferers though, were taking allupurinol or generic Colcrys for their gout. Be sure to talk to your doctor to determine which is right for you.

Reduce Gout Flares: Drink More Skimmed Milk

February 29, 2012 by Shelly.

Skim Milk
Skim Milk
Experimental studies have indicated that certain components of dairy products, particularly glycomacropeptide (GMP) and G600 milk fat extract (G600), can potentially lessen down the inflammatory response to gout crystals.

Researchers studied the frequency of gout flare-ups in 120 patients with the condition over 3 months. All of the people had experienced at least two flare-ups in the preceding 4 months.

The patients were divided into three different groups; lactose powder; skimmed milk powder; or skimmed milk powder enriched with GMP and g600. Each powder was mixed in 250 ml of water as a vanilla flavoured shake and drunk daily.

In all, 102 patients completed the three month study. And the results showed that those on the enriched skimmed milk diet had a significantly greater reduction in gout flare-ups compared with the other two groups.

There are many factors that can contribute to gout flare ups which include diet, and lifestyle, so speak with your family doctor if you suffer from gout flare ups.

Colchicine Cuts Heart Attack Risk in Half

March 28, 2012 by Julia.

Autumn Crocus-Colchicine
Autumn Crocus-Colchicine
According to a new retrospective study released by the New York Veteran Affairs Gout Cohort, gout sufferers who use colchicine have half the risk of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) compared to an untreated gout sufferer. This protection was not found in gout sufferers who used allopurinol.

Researchers studied 1300 gout patients to come up with their conclusions. They found that 0.5% of colchicine users had a heart attack, versus 3 percent of untreated gout users. The rate of MI was only two percent for allopurinol users, not a significant difference. Researchers believe that this may be due to allopurinol's inconsistency at lowering urate levels.

The lead researcher, Dr. Pillinger, stated that "these are very provocative findings." He hopes to begin a prospective study, once he and his team have completed a more rigorous retroactive study.

Colchicine is one of the most common treatments for gout. It is derived from a plant, the autumn crocus, and has been used as a gout treatment for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, it is only available in the US from one American manufacturer, and as such, it is much easier to buy Colcrys cheap at an online Canadian pharmacy than an American pharmacy. American gout sufferers can take advantage of this price difference by buying online. We recommend, which is fully licensed and based in Vancouver.

What many people do not realize is that the flushed medications can enter the water system. There, they can be ingested by plants and animals, or taint the ground water supply. Be sure to safely dispose of your medications in the proper locations, just like a refrigerator or computer disposal. From there, you can buy your prescriptions with the confidence that you are not unduly affecting your environment.

With the constant turnover in your medicine cabinet, you may be noticing a financial burden. However, there are many ways to save on your medications. New Gout Drug has Been Flagged by FDA

New gout drug
A potential new gout drug, brand named Arcalyst, has been flagged during its clinical trials by the FDA. Although the data shows that Arcalyst works as it should, to help lower uric acid levels as an addition to allopurinol, the FDA says its negative side effects may outweigh its positives. According to MedPage Today, Arcalyst can cause malignancies.

However, this drug is considered to fall into the 'unmet medical need' group. That is, the drug can be given to those who can not tolerate the usual gout medications, such as Colcrys, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Arcalyst could also be a useful prescribing tool for doctors with patients who may have drug interactions.

Until this drug is approved, gout sufferers will have to use what medication are on the market for this painful conditions. Colcrys, one of the most popular gout medications, is made from the extremely inexpensive autumn crocus, but is produced by only one American manufacturer.

Low lead levels in blood linked to gout risk

August 24, 2012 by Estella.

New study revealed that relatively low level of blood lead may be linked to an increased risk of developing gout, a painful form of arthritis.

Researchers have found that heavy lead exposure is linked to the condition - a form of arthritis in which the joint periodically become swollen, red and hot. Gout most often affects the big toe, though it can also strike the feet, ankles, knees, hands and wrists. Obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, certain foods will also boost the gout risk.

The recent research has suggested that low levels of lead which is within the safe range in gout also case gout. In adults, 25 microgram r lesser lead per deciliter of blood is considered safe.

"There is no level of lead exposure which can be termed as 'safe' or 'acceptable'." Said study leader Dr. Eswar Krishnan from Stanford University School of Medicine.

More than 6,100 Americans age 40 and up had their blood lead levels measured from a periodic federal health survey, and were interviewed about their health and lifestyle.

People with highest blood lead levels had more than a threefold greater risk of gout compared with adults with the lowest levels.

People with supposedly safe blood levels of head had a higher prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia than adults who have the lowest lead levels.

If you've worked with lead, tell your doctor and ask for a blood test. Your doctor may prescribe Colcrys 1mg tablets for gout treatment and prevention of low lead levels.

Daddy Needs a New Pair of Shoes

September 19, 2012 by Lisa.

from Tim Patterson
from Tim Patterson
Could improper footwear be contributing to increased pain in gout patients? Gout causes severe pain and swelling in the joints with the majority of cases affecting the feet. Unfortunately this inflammation can lead to misshapen joints making it difficult to find shoes that feel good. Often gout patients will resort to sandals, flip-flops, moccasins and ill fitting sneakers in an attempt to find comfort. These poor footwear choices may actually cause an increase in gout pain as they lack good support and stability.

A recent study from the University of Oxford in Auckland, New Zealand found that gout patients who chose these types of footwear experienced moderate to severe foot pain, impairment and disability compared with those who made good footwear choices. More than half of the patients in the study wore footwear that was 12 months or older and showed excessive wear patterns.

Better choices for footwear would include, walking shoes, athletic sneakers and oxfords. These choices have better cushioning, support and offer greater stability causing less pain. Look for shoes that have a wide toe box (wide space in the toe area) and removable insoles. Custom orthotics or standard orthotics that mold to the feet can reduce pressure and increase comfort. Buying new shoes at least once a year is also beneficial because even though the shoe may look like it is in good condition, it may have lost some of its conditioning and support.

Choosing better footwear can make a difference in gout pain. Prescription Colcrys can also help by blocking inflammation and relieving a gout attack, usually within 12-24 hours. Combine this with a trip to the shoe store and you could be walking without pain before you know it.

Traveling With Gout

November 22, 2012 by Teresa.

Thinking about taking a vacation? Maybe you have dreams of passing a series of languid afternoons in a hammock overlooking the Mediterranean. Sounds delightful, but if you have gout, the worries of an unexpected flare-up can be enough to keep those dreams forever on the back burner. Does traveling, especially flying, cause a gout attack?

Rest assured that traveling, rather by air or land, carries certain risks and not just for those people with gout. A long trip with many hours of sitting can be problematic. However, the risks are not particularly higher for people with gout than for those with other health conditions. As to whether a gout attack is more likely to happen because of high altitude, there is little evidence to support that assumption one way or the other.

Traveling can be stressful for gout sufferers though. The best way to ensure that you experience a successful trip is to be prepared beforehand. This really is as simple as making sure that you have an ample supply of medication with you. Also, you may want to consider starting your medication before the trip and taking it while you are away as an extra precautionary step.

Remembering to pack your medication is sensible advice. However, doing the things that most people should do on a trip to stay healthy ought to be a part of your plan as well. Flying can be very dehydrating. If you have gout, water is your best friend. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after the flight. Also, it is highly advised that for long trips, where you will be sitting for hours, walking and stretching every 20 minutes or so is a good practice.

If you have gout, make sure to work with your doctor to develop a treatment plan. Using the proper gout medication such as generic Colcrys and embracing lifestyle changes that help to manage the pain and flare-ups of gout are also important. Taking a trip should be a great way to relax and leave your everyday concerns behind for a while.
