Natural Gout Remedies from Your Pantry

1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar is a home remedy that has been recommended for everything from acne to indigestion. It has been used as a natural tonic for centuries. It contains a number of vitamins and minerals and has been said it can restore the natural pH balance in our blood. It also contains malic acid, which helps dissolve deposits of uric acid and flush them out of the body. It is recommended to drink 1 tablespoon of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar in distilled water twice daily.

2. Water
Yes, regular old water. Drinking 2-3 liters of water a day helps to flush toxins out of the body, including uric acid. Dehydration is one of the most common reasons a gout attack occurs and drinking plenty of water can help prevent this. 3. Cherries Eating cherries regularly, particularly bing cherries can prevent a gout attack. A study conducted by the USDA has shown that women who eat 48 bing cherries daily have a significant reduction of uric acid in their bodies. Another option would include cherry juice concentrate, which you can find at many health food stores.

4. Pineapple
Pineapples are high in potassium. Potassium helps turn uric acid into a solution that is easier for the kidneys to eliminate. Other foods that are high in potassium include bananas, cantaloupes, potatoes and yams. Pineapples also contain bromelain, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory enzyme that helps to digest protein molecules.

5. Milk
Although animal products such as red meat and seafood may increase uric acid levels, a study from the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that dairy products can be strongly protective against the condition. Drinking 1 to 5 glasses of low fat milk a day can reduce the risk of a gout flare up by 43%.

These improvements to your diet can help reduce uric acid and prevent a future gout attack. Medications such as Colchicine can help treat a current gout attack quickly by reducing inflammation. Although it does not lower the level of uric acid it can decrease the pain of an attack by blocking the inflammation caused by uric acid crystals.
