Hot Water for Gout Pain Relief

Gout can be painful. When the build up of uric acid in the bloodstream begins to crystallize and settles in your joints, discomfort follows. Anyone who has suffered from flareups or gout attacks usually welcomes any possible relief from the pain that they can find. Applying heat may help to break up those crystals. When inflammation is reduced the discomfort of an attack subsides. Adding a little Epsom salts and some ibuprofen to the treatment as well can make you even more comfortable.

Running a hot bath or swimming in a heated pool are two great ways to enjoy the benefits of warm water. Test the water first for comfort level. The last thing that you want is to get burned. Also as an additional precaution, diabetics or those with high blood pressure might consider using a hot cloth compress as sitting in a hot bath is not recommended for those conditions. Don't rush the treatment. Try to stay in the water for at least 15 minutes, longer is even better. As you relax in the hot water, the heat dilates your blood vessels, helping to improve circulation.

Epsom salts has magnesium in it. By adding two cups of it to hot water, it may enhance the benefits of the treatment. If you can manage a routine of hot water treatments twice daily, it is even more likely that your pain will be reduced. Taking two Ibuprofen before your bath for extra pain relief is also helpful. Try a soothing foot bath on occasion. Add a third of a cup of ground ginger to the water. You may notice that you start to sweat, but that may also help to eliminate excess uric acid from your system. Once again, don't rush the process. Set aside at least thirty minutes for the foot bath.

Incorporating light stretching before and after the hot bath can be helpful. In fact, stretching, overall, is a good practice to get into regardless of whether you suffer from gout or not. Nothing too vigorous is necessary, but stretching with gout is an ideal way to assist in decreasing the uric acid in the body while increasing flexibility.

In the end, water may be your best friend. Increasing your daily consumption of water is highly recommended. It has been thought that dehydration is a possible contributor to gout. Drinking plenty of water may or using certain medication treatments such as Colchicine 0.5mg can reduce the chances of a gout attack.

Is Gout Getting Younger?

Long ago Gout was a disease of the rich, also known as the "Disease of Kings". It was known to strike the wealthy, who were the only ones who could afford rich food and wine. Over the years, access to all types of foods has improved greatly but unfortunately, episodes of gout have risen with it. Over the past few decades the number of people suffering from gout or hyperuricemia (high blood uric acid) is growing at an alarming rate. Gout affects 1-2% of the Western population at some point in their lives. Although men between the ages of 40 and 50 and post menopausal women are the most likely to develop Gout, the age group of gout patients is beginning to get younger and younger. It is becoming more common among men and women in their 30's and is beginning to show up in 20-somethings and even teenagers!

Although gout in young people is often caused by a genetic condition, patients who are overweight and have high blood pressure are at a greater risk. A study published in Arthritis Care and Research found that obese men and women are more likely to develop gout at a younger age. The researchers looked at data of over 15,000 people between the ages of 13 and 87 that were part of a larger study examining cancer and heart disease. During the follow up period, 517 people from the subset reported having developed gout. At the start of the study, 16% of the participants were obese. The study found that the onset of gout began 11 years earlier in those who were obese at the age of 21. The study also found that obese participants were almost twice as likely to develop gout over an 18 year period as non-obese participants. Other studies have shown that weight loss can reduce the risk of gout.

It's no secret that obesity in young people is on the rise. Obesity now affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the United States; triple the rate from just one generation ago. High Fructose Corn Syrup found in sugary drinks and other junk foods may be a large contributing factor to the growing obesity epidemic and has also been shown to contribute to gout. Obese youth are also at a higher risk for many diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes and gallstones to name a few. Teaching children healthy eating habits and maintaining a healthy weight could help prevent future gout attacks. Although diet may play a large role in preventing gout attacks in younger people, prescription Colchicine can help treat the pain of a current gout attack reducing inflammation caused by uric acid build up.

A gout attack can be vicious and seem to come out of nowhere. Often it wakes people in the middle of the night. It affects the joints in the big toe. Gout is a serious condition and if not treated in a timely fashion can cause permanent damage.

During a gout attack, staying off your feet is advised. However, gout sufferers benefit from wearing comfortable shoes, not just during a gout attack but at all times. So what kind of shoes are recommended? Styles that offer a lot of room for the toes are the best. The wrong shoes can make gout worsen over time. This is true of other foot ailments, too. Yet, many people still insist on either wearing shoes that are stylish but uncomfortable or they are simply uninformed on the matter.

You would think that an open-toed shoes like a sandal would offer great relief to a gout sufferer's feet. Not true. Shoes without good support, lack of stability, or sufficient cushioning are poor choices. These misguided choices in shoe wear often lead to additional pain and disability. Only about 56% of people with gout select shoes that offer the proper support and comfort like athletic sneakers, walking shoes, or oxfords.

Those with gout need shoes that offer toe box width and heel sizing to suit your foot. There needs to be plenty of support and cushioning. However, the narrow shoes or pointed-toe shoes are definitely not going to help matters. Depth of shoe is important, too. Although sandals are not advised, if you do wear them make sure the strap does not cover the joint of the toe. Spot stretching with a ball and socket tool may help to widen the shoe just enough to take pressure off the painful joint. Arch supports can be inserted to take some pressure off the ball of the foot.

It isn't easy in a world of shoes and more shoes to find the kind of comfortable fit that is so important to those with gout. Seek advice from a podiatrist. Gout can be managed with proper non-medical care and medications such as Colchicine, but the right shoes are an important part of your treatment plan as well.

Is There a Connection Between Sleep Apnea and Gout?

Getting a good night's sleep seems like something that we all should be able to do with comparative ease. After all, even a little baby instinctively knows that sleep is good for you. However, many adults have sleep issues and really do not receive the restorative benefits of a full eight hours of proper sleep. If you suffer from gout, being sleep deprived can add to your problems. Sleep apnea, a more serious form of sleep disorder, may have a powerful influence on the development of gout. Sleep apnea causes repeated breathing pauses during sleep. These pauses cause serious changes in your oxygen levels. The reduction of oxygen in the blood, which results from sleep apnea, has been shown to cause the cells in the body to begin to disintegrate. These dying cells may go on to generate an excess of uric acid in the blood. Also, the percentage of carbon dioxide in the blood increases, which makes the blood more acidic and increases the likelihood of uric acid precipitation in the form of monosodium urate.

Sleep apnea is a significant problem on its own, but the implication of it contributing to gout is worth considering. There are anecdotal cases where if sleep apnea was treated, gout symptoms improved, too. Also, sleep apnea and gout patients show up in the same patient profile, middle-aged, overweight men. Furthermore, gout attacks tend to manifest more often during sleep.
