Exercising to Ease Gout Flares

Gout flares can be both painful and debilitating. Throbbing pain in your knee or foot usually makes your exercise decision for you. No one wants to have to hobble from machine to machine, or even to have to lace up your tight running shoes. However, some gentle exercise can often have a positive long term outcome on your gout flares. Although exercise can not remove all traces of uric acid from the body (diet changes are needed for this), gentle exercises definitely help to prevent future buildup of the dreaded uric acid, reducing the frequency and severity of gout flares.

But how to start? Your first step should be talking to your doctor. Your doctor can recommend which specific exercises can be safely used on your body. Everyone has gout in different parts of their body, and what works for your friend may have a negative effect on you. Also, remember that if you have a gout flare-up, be sure to stop exercising. You can get back on your schedule once the pain is gone.

"Range of motion" exercises tend to be a core element in a gout exercise regimen. Exercises such as tai chi, band exercises and gentle yoga are great for keeping the joints limber. This maximizes circulation in these areas, often clearing out uric acid. Range of motion exercises also reduce stiffness, which if left unchecked, can lead to loss of mobility, weight gain, and unnecessary pain.

Another great group of exercises to add to your regime are strength training exercises. With painful joint swelling from gout, sufferers often lose mobility and range of motion, also leading to a loss of strength in knees, ankles and hands. Using light weights, and building up your repetitions over time can counteract this. Squats are also a great option to strengthen the legs while keeping the knee joints mobile.

Stretching is an essential part of any workout. Once slightly warmed up, you should gently stretch out your muscles in order to prevent exercise injuries. Stretching promotes the flushing of uric acid, which is great for reducing the regularity of gout flares.

Increasing your exercise over time with gentle stretching and range of motion exercises can be a great addition to dietary changes and medicines prescribed by your doctor. Exercising combined with gout medicines such as colchicine should significantly reduce the frequency and severity of your gout flares. After you feel more limber and have more mobility, try some light strength training exercises. If these are not helping your gout pain, your doctor may suggest that you buy Colcrys or other anti-inflammatory drugs.

New Research Shows Colchicine May Help Fight Cancer

Treating Cancer with minimal damage to the patient's health is a constant battle for researchers and scientists developing new cancer fighting drugs. Finding a drug that targets only the infected cells in our body and does not harm otherwise healthy tissue is not an easy quest, but is the driven work of Professor Laurence Patterson, Director of the institute of Cancer Therapeutics at the University of Bradford, and his team.

Patterson's team are developing a new therapy that is based on the chemical Colchicine; a drug that is currently being used most commonly to treat gout.

Colchicine - a compound derived from the Autumn Crocus, the team believes that this is the first attempt at removing existing blood vessel supply to a tumour. Using an enzyme, only found in diseased tissue as a trigger means that it can also target secondary tumours caused by the cancer spreading through the body.

Their starting point was a batch of Matrix Metalloproteinases called MMP14, which had been identified in tumour tissue. This enzyme breaks down the proteins in surrounding healthy tissue and allows the tumour to proliferate. When the tiny molecules of the drug meet the MMP14 they combine to activate the drug.

Destroying Cancer's lifeline
The tumour grows by getting its nutrients from the body. So if you can destroy the vasculator that the tumour has, then you starve it of oxygen and nutrients. Professor Patterson explains, 'we knew there were these disrupting agents but they weren't targeted. The ones that were being trialled would work where they were absorbed so one of the areas where their toxicity was high was the heart. These drugs hadn't progressed because of this. That's what's so exciting about what we have achieved. Every tumour that we have looked at expresses this enzyme MMP14 and the reason why they all express it is because all tumours that are confined within their original normal tissue environment need to break out of that environment, it's an enzyme that has benefit to all tumour types.'

Clinical trial
Although the chemical, Colchicine is a natural derivative, the team are manufacturing it in the laboratory. The have established the concept and provided supporting evidence for the research, so once that funding has been established, they will begin the next phase of to develop the drug and begin clinical trial.

The beauty of this drug, Patterson says is its compatibility with conventional treatments such as chemotherapy. Taking into account the resistant nature of tumours, Colchicine promises another weapon in the body's battle, cutting off the blood supply that allows the cancer to flourish, so even an aggressive cancer could be neutralised.

Calcium Channel Blockers and Losartan Are Best for Gout Prevention

According to a new study into the risk of incident gout, calcium channel blockers such as Cardizem and Plendil, as well as losartan (Cozaar) are the least likely to cause gout.

The study, which looked at over 24,000 people with gout and compared them to 50,00 who didn't, discovered that hypertensive patients whose blood pressure was treated with calcium channel blockers or the angiotensin receptor blocker losartan were less likely to develop gout than patients who had been prescribed other anti-hypertensives.

Patients taking diuretics were more than twice as likely to develop gout. These were followed by beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers other than losartan. This is because calcium channel blockers and losartan have urate-lowering properties. A large build up of uric acid is what causes gout, a painful swelling of the joints, especially in the toes feet and hands.

Alcohol and Gout

There are many things that are accepted as "fact" to cause gout flares and attacks. Doctors will tell you, no drinking, no red meats, no asparagus, etc. But how do you know? And how much is too much?

Many people are unwilling to give up their treats and are trying new ways to reduce the occurrences of gout flares. Alcohol in particular seems to be a "vice" of many people. One article quoted a gout sufferer as saying "I will go completely vegetarian before I will give up my wine!" Drinking is an enjoyable social interaction, with billions of people worldwide enjoying booze, whether it is a glass of wine with dinner or having multiple drinks while out dancing.

The question is-are you willing to give all of that up? Many patients are saying no. a trick that has worked for many patients is- if you have alcohol. Flush it out! That is, drink a huge amount of water to "rinse" out the uric acid before it has a chance to crystallize in your joints. This has the added benefit of reducing hangovers!

Most patients, who have had gout for many years, have stated that how much you can drink really depends on how good the rest of your diet is. For example, after eating steak, mashed potatoes and macaroni salad, having a couple of beers isn't necessarily a good idea. But having a healthy salad with grilled chicken may work to allow you to have a glass or two of red wine. Many gout sufferers reported "experimenting" with their diet and alcohol consumption in order to determine which approach is best for them. Are you willing to risk having a gout flare in order to have a drink?

From our research, red wine seems to be the best tolerated of the alcohols. Many patients reported no reaction to having a glass of wine with dinner, or even a glass or two on special occasions. Beer on the other hand, seems to be the least tolerated. There may be many reasons for this. Beer tends to be drunk in multiples, whereas a glass of wine is slowly sipped and enjoyed.

Wine though, especially red wine is quite acidic, and some gout sufferers are reporting that this is causing more flares than beer. All of these gout sufferers though, were taking allupurinol or generic Colcrys for their gout. Be sure to talk to your doctor to determine which is right for you.

Reduce Gout Flares: Drink More Skimmed Milk

Experimental studies have indicated that certain components of dairy products, particularly glycomacropeptide (GMP) and G600 milk fat extract (G600), can potentially lessen down the inflammatory response to gout crystals.

Researchers studied the frequency of gout flare-ups in 120 patients with the condition over 3 months. All of the people had experienced at least two flare-ups in the preceding 4 months.

The patients were divided into three different groups; lactose powder; skimmed milk powder; or skimmed milk powder enriched with GMP and g600. Each powder was mixed in 250 ml of water as a vanilla flavoured shake and drunk daily.

In all, 102 patients completed the three month study. And the results showed that those on the enriched skimmed milk diet had a significantly greater reduction in gout flare-ups compared with the other two groups.

There are many factors that can contribute to gout flare ups which include diet, and lifestyle, so speak with your family doctor if you suffer from gout flare ups.
